Non-Functional Progressions - Vol. III

Last month, we looked at one way to connect ideas between two seemingly unrelated chords, E-7 and DbMaj7 (from the progression below). This time around, we'll look at a different way of creating cohesive ideas between these two chords

E-7 | Db Maj7 | F Maj 7 | C-7

Another structure found within the E Dorian and Db Lydian scales, respectively is the major triad with the second degree added (1235 pattern):

Within the E Dorian scale, this structure can be built on the notes G, A and D:

Within the Db Lydian scale, it can be built on the notes Db, Eb, and Ab:
By using the 1235 patterns from each scale, a very effective 8th note line can be created to connect these two chords, and resolve to the F Maj 7. Notice that the contour of the line varies in the first half of each measure, and is the same in the second half of each measure.
Until next time,
AG
